MUSICIAN - COMPOSER - TEACHER

Josh Norling

Saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Josh Norling has been a part of the music community in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada since 2004. During that time he has recorded and performed on a variety of instruments with numerous groups covering a diverse range of styles.

When not performing: Josh teaches private lessons and group classes at the Algoma Conservatory of Music, and is an adjunct music instructor at Algoma University.

Josh began studying music late in high school during grade 12 at Korah Collegiate & Vocational School in Sault Ste Marie, studying privately on saxophone with Lynne Reville. Learning the trade while studying as many styles of music as possible quickly became his top priority: playing with the high school concert band, local jazz groups and blues musicians, The Sault Swing Band, Korah’s Motown and Soul group Mustang Sally, and a few other projects. It really didn’t matter what kind of music it was, Josh wanted to learn as much as he could and play it to the best of his ability.

After graduating high school, Josh attended Algoma University for four years, continuing his Jazz saxophone studies with Val Suriano, before transferring to Laurentian University for his final honours year, studying with Allan Walsh, and graduating cum laude.

Josh has since maintained an active performance schedule as a freelance saxophonist and bassist. With over 20 albums in his discography as a sideman, he is also currently in the process of composing his first album of original Jazz as a bandleader.
